Ukraine ready for trilateral talks with U.S. and Russia at leaders’ level, FM Sybiha says

Europe's energy landscape has undergone a significant shift following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The previous emphasis on sustainability has given way to a renewed focus on efficiency and security. Anant Maheshwari, president of strategy and global regions at Honeywell Technologies, notes that the security and cost of gas supply are now critical factors. The Russian invasion has made European dependence on Russian gas untenable, leading to a reassessment of how Europe powers its economy.

China's approach to energy security has been particularly noteworthy. Unlike Europe, China does not control many traditional energy sources and relies on a diverse mix of technologies, including solar, wind, biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, and carbon capture. This approach demonstrates the importance of building an energy system that is simultaneously cleaner, more affordable, and secure. China's rapid deployment of a wide range of technologies sets it apart from other regions.

Brazil, another major player, stands out as a frontrunner in biofuels. Leveraging its agricultural resources and expertise in crops like sugarcane and macaúba, Brazil has the potential to create renewable fuels for sectors where electrification is challenging, such as aviation. Maheshwari highlights the opportunity to produce renewable fuels from locally grown materials, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Europe, despite its world-class technology companies, strong research and development capabilities, and rich industrial base, faces challenges in quickly deploying new technologies. Maheshwari emphasizes the need for Europe to accelerate the energy transition through regulatory support. Currently, 48% of the energy produced in the EU comes from renewable sources, and 28% from nuclear.

However, Europe must optimize the use of all parts of this mix by expanding renewables, nuclear, and natural gas, while also making fossil fuel generation cleaner through emission reduction measures.

Efficiency plays a crucial role in meeting Europe's energy demands. Maheshwari cites a global fast food restaurant chain as an example. By connecting stores to a central system for energy monitoring, the chain identified significant variations in energy consumption, enabling substantial reductions in energy use. This example illustrates that significant savings can be achieved by applying systems to various areas, not just those specifically designed for energy efficiency.

Incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the physical economy is another promising avenue for enhancing efficiency. Unlike IT systems, industrial processes often involve legacy equipment and complex, long-lasting systems. AI can optimize building controls by learning from occupancy patterns and adjusting heating or cooling accordingly.

However, integrating AI into physical systems presents unique challenges, including the need to connect data to physical processes while maintaining legacy equipment. Maheshwari refers to this broader concept as "physical AI," which encompasses the application of AI to optimize buildings, factories, assets, and supply chains. For Honeywell, physical AI involves using AI to improve the efficiency and automation of physical processes across various industries.
