TotalEnergies launches the Ima Gas Development to Supply Nigeria LNG liquefaction plant

TotalEnergies and its partner AMNI have made a Final Investment Decision (FID) for the development of the Ima gas field. This offshore field, located in shallow waters near Bonny Island, will be developed on a single platform. The Ima gas field will be connected to Nigeria LNG via a 22 km pipeline. The project aims to start production in 2028, with an expected output of 350 million cubic feet of gas per day, equivalent to more than 60,000 barrels of oil per day.

This will provide about one-third of the gas necessary for the expansion of the Nigeria LNG Train 7 project, boosting its capacity from 22 million tons annually to 30 Mtpa. The Ima development is characterized by its low cost and low emissions, featuring a simplified platform design, power supply from the shore, zero flaring, and continuous methane detection and monitoring.

The project was developed in collaboration with the Nigerian company AMNI, resulting in significant local content, with nearly all key contractors being Nigerian firms. Ima also contributes to community development, with approximately 60% of the workforce anticipated to be sourced from local communities during the project's development.

Speaking about the FID, Nicolas Terraz, President Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies, expressed satisfaction, stating that Ima demonstrates TotalEnergies' ability to unlock new low-cost and low-emissions gas resources. He added that the project aligns with the incentives provided by the Nigerian government for non-associated gas developments.

For its part, Matthieu Bouyer, Country Chair and Managing Director of TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited, emphasized that Ima is a project "for Nigerians, by Nigerians." This statement highlights the strong Nigerian presence in the project, from the partner AMNI to the project teams, contractors, and financial backers. Bouyer also affirmed that IMA will support Nigeria LNG's expansion while generating enduring value for Nigeria and its partners.
