Govt Promises To Complete Takoradi Market Project

The Ghanaian government has pledged to finish the Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment project, assuring traders in the region. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government expressed its determination to finish the project by pursuing a new funding approach to settle the €18 million debt owed to the contractor. The project, initially launched in 2020 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, was halted in early 2023 amid the government's debt restructuring plans.

When the NDC gained power, John Mahama, the party's presidential candidate, pledged to complete the project post-election. However, two years later, no actionable progress has been made. During his inspection tour of the project site, Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, inspected the site alongside the project consultant and contractor representatives. They provided Ayariga with an update on the current project status and the challenges hampering its completion.

The minister expressed hope that the new funding mechanism would enable the contractor to resume work within two months. Ayariga also mentioned that commercial banks would assist traders with their re-entry fees, ensuring a seamless market occupation upon its completion. Furthermore, Ayariga toured the Assembly's landfill site at Sofokrom, assuring the government's dedication to improving the facility's management to enhance environmental sanitation and sustainable waste management in the region.
