Swedish, Finnish fighter jets scramble to identify and intercept Russian military aircraft

Tensions along the Baltic Sea have noticeably escalated in recent years, prompting Nordic nations to frequently deploy fighter jets to identify Russian aircraft. HELSINKI: Finland's air force announced on Friday that Swedish and Finnish fighter jets had been activated to categorize Russian fighter jets traversing the Gulf of Finland.

The air force disclosed that the two Nordic countries' Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) jets were deployed on Thursday. They had identified a Russian detachment comprising a Tu-134 transport aircraft, MiG-31 fighter jets, and Su-30 fighter jets operating within international airspace over the Gulf of Finland. This marked the first joint operational identification mission for the two air forces, according to the military.

Rising tensions in the Baltic Sea have been a recurring concern, with Nordic jets routinely scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft. Following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, both Sweden and Finland abandoned decades of military non-alignment and joined NATO. In response to the operation, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson remarked on X that "the Baltic Sea has never been as vulnerable as it is now – but it has also never been better protected than it is right now."
