Ottawa signs preliminary deal with Swedish firm Saab for 6 GlobalEye aircraft

On Thursday, fighter jets from Finland and Sweden intercepted and identified a group of Russian military aircraft in international airspace over the Gulf of Finland, marking the first joint operation between the two Nordic countries. This incident occurred amid heightened tensions in the Baltic Sea region, where Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has led to incidents such as gas pipeline outages, airspace violations, and drone sightings.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson highlighted the operation as a demonstration of the Quick Reaction Alert cooperation, emphasizing how it monitors and safeguards the airspace of both nations. He described it as a tangible expression of the trust and readiness built through Nordic, Nordic-Baltic, and broader NATO cooperation in the region. Kristersson shared these sentiments on social media platform X, stating that while the Baltic Sea has never been as vulnerable as it is now, it has also never been better protected.

The Finnish Air Force confirmed that the two air forces' jets tracked down and identified a group of Russian aircraft, which included a transport plane and several fighter jets. The Russian embassies in Stockholm and Helsinki have not yet responded to Reuters' requests for comment on the matter.

The decision of Finland and Sweden to join NATO following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine marked a departure from their longstanding policy of non-alignment. Their neighbors Norway, Iceland, and Denmark were already members of NATO, as were Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, the three Baltic republics.
