HNDL: Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamad Hasan has disclosed that sea levels in the country could rise by up to 0.74 meters by 2100, as reported by climate experts. During a high-level plenary session on the threats posed by rising sea levels at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) 81, Mohamad emphasized that this challenge has become increasingly significant for Malaysia, a maritime and coastal nation.

He stated that the impacts are already being felt across the islands and coastal regions. "For Malaysia, a maritime and coastal nation, the rise in sea levels poses an increasingly pressing challenge for our development and resilience," he said. "The implications of this risk include direct threats to our water supply, agriculture, and infrastructure.

Coastal communities are also becoming more exposed to flooding, erosion, and saltwater intrusion." The Malaysian Prime Minister highlighted that Malaysia is strengthening its adaptation efforts through the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 and the development of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Malaysia. However, he stressed that countries like Malaysia cannot tackle climate change alone and urged developed nations to fulfill their commitments regarding climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building.

"Such support must be expected, easily accessible, and sufficient," he emphasized. Mohamad also mentioned that Malaysia raised the declaration it endorsed during the session, stressing that the emphasis on science, data, and preparedness reflects the importance of multi-stakeholder cooperation in addressing rising sea levels. "The consensus behind this declaration demonstrates the value of multilateralism. Our priority now is to move forward with its implementation."
