Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Mohamad Hasan revealed that sea level rise could increase by up to 0.74 meters by 2100, according to a climate panel cited by the Minister. Speaking at a high-level plenary session on the existential threat posed by rising sea levels at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Mohamad emphasized that the impact has been felt across the country and coastal regions.

He stated, "For Malaysia, a maritime and coastal nation, the rise in sea levels poses an increasingly significant challenge to our development and resilience." Mohamad explained that the risks involve direct consequences for our water supply, agriculture, and infrastructure. Coastal communities also face heightened exposure to flooding, erosion, and saltwater intrusion.

The Minister noted that Malaysia is strengthening adaptation efforts through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 and the development of a National Adaptation Plan. However, he stressed that countries like Malaysia cannot tackle climate change independently and urged developed nations to fulfill their commitments regarding climate funding, technology transfer, and capacity building.

"Such support must be expected, easily accessible, and sufficient," Mohamad emphasized. The Deputy Prime Minister also mentioned that Malaysia raised a declaration adopted during the session, stressing the importance of science, data, and preparedness, highlighting the significance of multi-lateral cooperation in addressing sea level rise.

"The consensus on this declaration shows the value of multilateralism. Our priority now is its implementation," he concluded.
