Makkah defense pact ministers condemn attacks on Saudi Arabia, plan urgent military talks

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan convened a meeting in New York with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Thursday. The discussion took place under the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement. The ministers reviewed the progress made towards establishing the agreement's general secretariat, committees, and working groups, as well as preparations for them to commence their respective tasks.

The three foreign ministers vehemently condemned the attacks on Makkah and civilian, economic facilities in Saudi Arabia. They commended the Saudi Armed Forces for their vigilance and ability to safeguard the Kingdom's security. Furthermore, they reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's right to implement measures for its own protection as outlined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

The ministers also deliberated on plans for an emergency gathering of the chiefs of staff from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Türkiye to explore ways to provide assistance to the Kingdom in line with the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement. Article 51 of the UN Charter stipulates that an assault on one party is tantamount to an attack against all parties.

Additionally, the ministers discussed the prevailing regional situation, emphasizing the significance of adhering to international law, fostering good-neighborly relations, respecting state sovereignty, and refraining from meddling in internal affairs. They also highlighted the necessity of ensuring maritime security and freedom of navigation.

Finally, they reiterated their commitment to working towards lasting peace and stability in the region, supporting efforts to de-escalate tensions and promoting peaceful resolutions to ongoing conflicts.
