However, his contract with Saudi Arabian organizers required him to participate in a British fight, and staging the bout in the United States would have necessitated reopening the deal. A New York date at Madison Square Garden was subsequently dropped.

Cardiff holds significance for Joshua, who trained at the Pravilo facility in Dubai, which incorporates Slavic and Russian training methods.
