GNAT demands independent probe into death of teacher at Gindabour

The Northern Regional Executives of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) are calling for an independent and transparent investigation into the death of teacher Abu Seidu, who allegedly encountered police personnel at Gindabour in the Savannah Region. GNAT argues that the Ghana Police Service should not be the sole investigator in an incident involving its personnel.

The teacher died on September 16, 2026, in circumstances that are disputed. GNAT demands that the investigation uncover the details surrounding the encounter between Seidu and the police until his death. They emphasize that the investigation must be impartial and credible to gain public trust. The union also demands that the autopsy findings on Seidu be included in the investigation and made transparent to his family and the public, subject to legal requirements.

Additionally, GNAT is calling for an independent inquiry into the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu, who was killed in a mob attack following the police encounter, as well as allegations of vandalism, assault, and intimidation committed during subsequent security operations in Gindabour.
