A baby girl appears to alter a father’s relationship priorities in one highly specific way

A recent study suggests that having a daughter may lead fathers to prioritize their romantic relationship with the child's mother. Researchers from Rutgers Business School found that fathers of daughters reported stronger attachment to their partners compared to fathers of sons. The study, published in Personality and Individual Differences, provides evidence that a child's sex can influence a father's behavior and psychological well-being.

According to Dr. Kristina M. Durante, the lead researcher, fathers of daughters may model reliable male investment, which could encourage daughters to seek out committed partners. The findings were based on three separate studies, each examining different aspects of the relationship between fathers and their partners. In the first study, 184 parents with a single child under 18 were surveyed, with 101 fathers and 83 mothers.

Fathers of daughters reported stronger attachment to their child's mother, scoring an average of 8.04 on a 9-point scale, while fathers of sons scored 7.37. In the second study, researchers analyzed data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study involving 587 couples. They found that mothers of daughters received more partner-directed support from their fathers shortly after childbirth.

Fathers of daughters also showed decreases in attachment anxiety after their child's birth, indicating increased relationship security. The study suggests that having a daughter may prompt fathers to maintain a stronger pair-bond with the mother, promoting long-term family stability.
