The businesswoman leading the Hasso-Plattner Institute (HPI), Daniela Gerd tom Markotten, supports calls for tech giants to open their artificial intelligence systems to scrutiny by independent experts. She told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, "I would like to tell tech companies, in response to their warnings, that they should make the blackbox, which we see today, transparent so we can look inside."

Gerd tom Markotten believes a team of independent experts should be established to oversee the review, with top European researchers involved. If tech companies sincerely believe in their warnings, they should also have no objection to these experts being consulted, she stated. The 51-year-old, previously head of digitalization and technology at Deutsche Bahn and at Daimler, says that when reviewing a model, the auditors—scientists with no financial interest—should have access to all data and models.

"That would be a proposal for a solution," she said. Gerd tom Markotten warns against the alarmist tone of the debate, advocating for a "professionalization" of the conversation. She stresses that a super-intelligent AI, currently uncontrolled, is not in sight. The technology itself is neutral and does not have malicious intentions; it merely seeks to solve a problem or complete a task assigned to it.

The crucial point is that humans should retain the final decision-making power in critical situations. Gerd tom Markotten argues that AI should remain a tool serving humanity.
