Ukraine, Iran ministers discuss efforts to keep tensions down

Ukrainian and Iranian ministers met to discuss strategies for maintaining calm amid escalating tensions, as reported by Andrii Sybiha, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister. This discussion took place during a side event at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, following a July phone call between the two diplomats. The meeting aimed to address the aftermath of a Ukrainian drone strike on an Iranian vessel, which resulted in the death of one sailor and injuries to another.

Iran had previously threatened retaliation in response to the attack. Over more than four and a half years of conflict with Russia, Ukraine has encountered Iranian-designed drones and has developed countermeasures to protect against such threats. During their conversation, Sybiha emphasized the importance of maintaining open lines of communication and reaffirmed Ukraine's commitment to a swift restoration of peace and stability in both their regions.
