Prime Minister of Republic of Haiti meets Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha conversed with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on September 23 to explore ways of preventing tensions from escalating between their respective nations. During the meeting, which took place at the sidelines of the 81st U.N. General Assembly in New York City, both diplomats agreed to maintain open communication channels and pledged to uphold their respective countries' positions.

They also discussed the Middle East and Europe as well as ongoing peace efforts. Sybiha reiterated Ukraine's stance in favor of a prompt restoration of peace and stability in both regions. This conversation followed a prior discussion with Araghchi in July after Ukraine had attacked a vessel carrying military cargo between Russia and Iran, an incident Iran's Foreign Ministry disputed, claiming it was a commercial vessel targeted by Ukraine, resulting in one sailor's death and another's injury.

Sybiha emphasized Russia's full responsibility for its war against Ukraine and all associated casualties. Iran has been a steadfast ally of Russia throughout Ukraine's war, with Iranian Shahed drones frequently employed by Russian forces to attack Ukraine's military, cities, and infrastructure over the past four years. Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed his support for Iran, pledging continued assistance to the latter as it contends with the U.S. over the Strait of Hormuz.

Sybiha emphasized the importance of diplomacy in direct conversations, even in challenging circumstances.
