Trump, Xi show apparent differences over AI guardrails at White House meeting

In a White House summit on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared to have differing views on artificial intelligence (AI) oversight. Xi stressed during the welcome ceremony that AI should remain under human control, while Trump has previously dismissed concerns about AI safety, labeling them as a hoax.

The summit took place amid a U.S. debate over AI development pace, with concerns that advanced technology could surpass human control and pose security risks. Both countries are leading nations in AI development, according to Xi.

Trump, in a prior post on social media platform Truth Social, highlighted AI, termed "superintelligence," as a key summit topic. He argued that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) serves as the country's guardrail against AI misuse. During a U.N. General Assembly speech on Tuesday, Trump reiterated the U.S.'s opposition to any globalist scheme to control AI, stating that the administration would not stifle AI growth.

The administration reportedly proposed a notification mechanism for bilateral communication to address AI events with security implications.
