White House asks OpenAI and Anthropic to hold new models from UK testers until US review, sources say.

The White House has requested that OpenAI and Anthropic withhold their new AI models from the UK government's testing agency until the models have undergone testing by the US government, according to sources. The request came from the Office of the National Cyber Director and puts the companies in a difficult position, as they must choose between withholding their models from the UK's AI Security Institute or risking upsetting the Trump administration.

Anthropic has agreed to the request, while OpenAI has not responded to the request. The UK's AI Security Institute has established close relationships with leading AI labs and routinely tests their latest models ahead of public release. However, the UK government has sought to downplay any clash with the Trump administration's insistence that the US government get first access to emerging systems.
