Second Saraighat Rail cum Road Bridge to Transform Multimodal Connectivity across Brahmaputra with Doubling of Agthori–Kamakhya Section to Strengthen Northeast

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is constructing a Second Saraighat Rail-cum-Road Bridge in Assam, which will significantly enhance multimodal connectivity across the Brahmaputra River. This project involves doubling the railway track between Agthori and Kamakhya stations, a critical link for transportation in the region. The new bridge will be a 7.20-km double-decker structure, with one deck for railway tracks and the other for a three-lane road and footpath.

The lower deck will have a span of 125 meters, while the upper deck will be supported by approach viaducts on both banks of the river. Larsen & Toubro, a leading Indian engineering and construction company, has been tasked with the project's execution. The bridge's completion will not only increase passenger and freight capacity but also improve road connectivity between northern and southern banks of Guwahati.

The project has already overcome several challenges related to land acquisition, encroachments, and utility shifting. With the remaining interfaces being resolved, the engineering and construction activities are progressing rapidly. The project is scheduled to be completed within the next few years, and it will be closely monitored by the concerned authorities, including the Railway Board.
