IFC MD visits Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, highlights heritage tourism and jobs in Ghana

Ghana's cultural heritage plays a significant role in its tourism industry, contributing to the economy and generating jobs in various sectors. Makhtar Diop, the Managing Director of IFC, a subsidiary of the World Bank Group, visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to celebrate the nation's historical legacy and showcase how tourism can foster economic growth and job creation. The park, dedicated to Ghana's first president and his role in African independence and unity, is one of the country's top 10 tourist destinations.

The Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial and Mausoleum Park underwent a $4.8 million redevelopment supported by the World Bank. The enhanced facility now functions as a center for cultural events, educational tours, and national celebrations, preserving an essential part of Ghana's history while offering an educational experience for both local residents and international tourists.

During his visit, IFC's Makhtar Diop emphasized the importance of preserving Ghana's heritage and its connections to the private sector's investment in tourism-related businesses.

Heritage attractions like the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park bring visitors to Ghana, creating a demand for various services such as accommodation, dining, transportation, guided tours, and locally produced goods. By strengthening these connections, tourism spending can benefit small businesses and communities throughout the country.

IFC is actively supporting this broader tourism economy through financing for PLP Properties' development of a 170-room Hampton By Hilton hotel in Accra. This project aims to provide more internationally branded mid-scale accommodation, which is expected to directly and indirectly support nearly 1,000 jobs, including 200 permanent positions.

The redevelopment of the park and IFC's investment in the hospitality sector demonstrate complementary efforts to enhance Ghana's tourism sector. Aspects such as cultural attractions improve visitor experiences, while private investments expand the services required to accommodate tourists and create employment opportunities for local suppliers.
