Scottie Scheffler-Sam Burns leads U.S. off in Presidents Cup foursomes

The U.S. secured a 3-2 advantage over the International team in the first doubles matches of the Presidents Cup, held at Medinah Country Club in Chicago. Veteran Justin Thomas and rookie Jackson Koivun delivered a decisive 4 and 3 win over Corey Conners and Nico Echavarria, propelling the U.S. to the lead. Thomas boasts a perfect record of 7-0 in Presidents Cup fourball matches.

The International team made a comeback, overcoming their previous loss in all five matches at Royal Montreal in 2024. In the final match of the day, Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns were forced to play until the end, overcoming Min Woo Lee and Sungae Im by a single stroke, while Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa edged out Adam Scott and Ryan Fox by a four and two score.

Morikawa remains undefeated in his fourball matches with a record of 7-2 overall. The U.S. retaliated with a 3-1 victory by Hideki Matsuyama and Roy Hisatsune over Cameron Young and Xander Schauffele, and a 3-2 win by Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim over Patrick Cantlay and Chris Gotterup. The game concluded with Tom Kim narrowly sinking a putt at the par-3 16th hole, which was conceded once the players saw the proximity of the ball to the hole.

Tom Kim's tally now stands at 3-1 in Presidents Cup doubles. The next set of matches will be five foursomes sessions on September 25.
