Medical team begins probe into 37 miners’ deaths in NSCDC custody

On Thursday, September 24th, the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, visited Minna, Niger State, to participate in the 7-day Fidau prayer for deceased miners who died in the Corps' custody. The visit aimed to offer condolences directly to affected families during their period of grief.

During the meeting, Professor Audi strongly condemned any individuals found culpable in the incident, emphasizing that justice and transparency would be a priority. He assured families that anyone found guilty would be prosecuted according to the laws of the land, and no one would be shielded from accountability.

The Commandant General reiterated his support for the investigative panel responsible for uncovering the truth about the tragic incident. He joined the bereaved families and community members in prayers for the deceased, describing the loss as deeply painful. The Corps also expressed condolences to the Emir of Minna, acknowledging his role as a father figure in the community.

Professor Audi explained that the visit was also to join Muslim faithful in offering prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and to lend strength to the bereaved families. He noted that a high-powered investigative committee had been established under the Federal Government's directive to probe the incident, and the Corps was fully cooperating with the panel.

The Corps has also ensured the safety of relevant personnel by placing them in protective custody. Additionally, the NSCDC flag was ordered to fly at half-mast across all formations for three days as a mark of mourning and accountability. The Corps awaits autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
