37 NSCDC custody deaths: Committee of inquiry begins investigation

The Independent Committee of Inquiry into the alleged deaths of 37 individuals in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has commenced its proceedings. The inaugural meeting was held following the committee's swearing-in, with Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, serving as the secretary. The committee outlined its plan to investigate the incident, which includes visiting relevant sites, consulting with government agencies, and interviewing survivors, suspects, and others with pertinent information.

The medical team has already begun its work to ascertain the cause, mechanism, and manner of the deaths. The committee has called for public support and invited submissions from interested individuals and organizations, with further details to be announced. The committee emphasized its dedication to a thorough, impartial, transparent, and evidence-based inquiry, promising regular updates to the public on their progress.
