Luke Loucks reveals the strategy behind FSU’s tougher schedule

Florida State basketball coach Luke Loucks revealed the reasoning behind the Seminoles' tougher 2026-27 schedule in a recent interview with Voice of the Seminoles Jeff Culhane. Loucks explained that the team intentionally strengthened both its preseason and nonconference schedules to discover weaknesses early and build a competitive résumé for the March basketball tournament.

Before the regular season, FSU will play exhibition games against SEC teams Mississippi State, Auburn, and LSU in October. The regular-season schedule includes hosting Florida, traveling to Tennessee for the ACC/SEC Challenge, facing Texas A&M and Houston at neutral sites, and hosting Dayton in a 14-game nonconference schedule. Loucks emphasized the importance of playing real mid-major teams and not filling the schedule with "cupcake" games that provide comfortable victories but do not help the team's postseason résumé.

The program consulted with the NCAA, ESPN, and others familiar with the selection process to put the Seminoles in a better position for an at-large bid. Ultimately, Loucks stressed that winning games is the most crucial aspect of the scheduling strategy.
