Johnathan crashes out of Asian Games 10m air pistol event

On Thursday, Johnathan Wong's aspirations for an Asian Games shooting medal in the men's 10m pistol were dashed. The two-time Olympian achieved an average score of just 572 points, which resulted in his 23rd place finish out of 60 participants. This outcome left Johnathan disappointed, as he had secured sixth place in the final round during the 2022 Hangzhou Games, where he scored 580 points.

Notably, during the 2022 Hangzhou Games, the top eight shooters all achieved scores exceeding 580 points. Notable performances included Iqbal Raia Prabowo of Indonesia, who scored 589, China's Bu Shuai Hang and Aulia Sultanul Maruf, both with scores of 583. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan's Vladimir Svechnikov set a new final-round Games record of 244.3, surpassing the Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary's 240.7 mark from the 2018 Games to claim the gold medal.

China's Hu Kai and Shuai Hang secured silver and bronze respectively, with scores of 243 and 222.1. Johnathan Wong, a multiple SEA Games gold medallist who competed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics, will have another opportunity to redeem himself when he competes in the 10m mixed team event alongside Nurul Syasya Nadiah Ariffin on Friday.
