Ghana to host high-level conference on education in emergencies

Ghana is set to host a high-level conference on Scaling Education Initiatives in Emergencies in West Africa, from September 29 to 30, 2026, in Accra. The conference aims to explore strategies for strengthening education systems during crises. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu revealed that the conference will address four key questions: identifying effective practices during school closures, scaling successful interventions, determining financing for emergency education responses, and collective action among West African countries to protect education during emergencies.

The Minister referenced the COVID-19 pandemic as an example of how emergencies can disrupt education, highlighting Ghana's response with digital mechanisms. He warned that conflicts and disasters could lead to increased school dropout rates, teenage pregnancies, learning losses, and declining literacy and numeracy outcomes. The Minister also cited the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage and other emergencies that displaced communities and disrupted teaching and learning.

Despite these challenges, Ghana continues to implement measures such as expanding Complementary and Accelerated Education programs and investing in foundational learning. The Minister emphasized the importance of teacher development and encouraged attendees to share both successful and unsuccessful interventions.
