Ghana is arguably Africa’s most stable democracy, says Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama, during his address to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, proclaimed Ghana as "arguably the most stable democracy in Africa". Mahama highlighted the country's commitment to constitutional rule, human rights, and peaceful democratic transitions. He argued that Ghana's democratic experience illustrates that constitutional governance can offer a lasting framework for national development.

Mahama emphasized that Ghana believes in the rule of law and holds human rights in high regard. He expressed his determination to showcase that democracy truly functions. He acknowledged that Ghana's democratic journey, while sometimes slower due to its reliance on constitutional processes, consultation, participation, and consensus-building, ultimately results in more sustainable democratic decisions.

The value of democracy, Mahama stated, should be judged not solely by elections but by its tangible impact on citizens' lives. He stressed that democratic governance must translate into improved access to food, quality education, decent housing, healthcare, and economic opportunities. "I have always believed that democracy must deliver tangible social benefits," he declared.

"Citizens must experience democracy not only through the ballot box every four years, but through improved access to food, quality education, decent housing, accessible healthcare, and economic opportunity."

Mahama also used Ghana's democratic credentials to advocate for stronger democratic principles and greater representation in international institutions. He connected his country's domestic experience to his wider call for reforms aimed at making global governance more representative and responsive.
