Bulgaria preparing international initiative on Black Sea shipping security – president

Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova announced Bulgaria's intention to lead an international initiative aimed at enhancing Black Sea shipping security during her address to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. President Iotova stated that Bulgaria is committed to working with regional nations and all interested parties to achieve a collective agreement and action to ensure the freedom and security of navigation in the Black Sea.

She emphasized that the security and stability of the Black Sea region are integral to Bulgaria's national security, and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has now expanded beyond the territorial waters of the warring parties, directly impacting Bulgaria. To transform the Black Sea from a zone of heightened risks to one of shared security, Bulgaria proposes transforming it into a hub for free transport, energy, trade, and digital corridors.

Iotova urged for a shift in focus from military security to a comprehensive approach that includes a treaty and legal component, to prevent a new arms race and ensure true peace and security in Europe. She also stressed the importance of diplomatic efforts alongside military and economic security, warning that Europe cannot remain a mere observer in the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict.

Iotova called for a collective discussion on the future of European security policy, proposing a vision for a Europe of peace built on persuasive defense and shared security.
