Drama At The High Court Complex: MP Escapes From EOCO’s Claws

At the High Court Complex in Accra yesterday, a heated altercation unfolded between Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, and officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The MPs were present in court to represent a detained nurse, Salomey Baffoe Awity, who faces charges in the ongoing Ghana Jollof case.

After the hearing, which has been postponed, the MP and a female EOCO representative engaged in a confrontational exchange outside the courtroom. The MP refused to cooperate with the EOCO official's request to accompany her to the office, insisting that if required, he would travel to the office himself. When he attempted to enter his vehicle, the woman allegedly tried to prevent him from leaving.

He was eventually pushed away and supporters blocked a security vehicle to allow the MP to depart. The woman then joined another vehicle and pursued the MP's vehicle, with supporters blocking the security car to aid his escape. The MP later explained to journalists that his actions were motivated by a desire to protect his personal safety and that of his family.

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, criticized the incident as an abuse of power and called for more humane actions from the state institution. EOCO confirmed that it had attempted to arrest the MP in connection with ongoing investigations, stating that previous invitations to cooperate were not honored. They emphasized that while the MPs' membership does not exempt them from legal consequences, they are not beyond the law's reach.
