Brazil and Australia meet in double-header to start rebuilds

Brazil and Australia have agreed to a double-header of friendly matches to aid in their respective rebuilding efforts following their World Cup campaigns. The first game will take place in Townsville, with Brazil facing off against Australia's Socceroos on Friday. A second clash is scheduled for Brisbane the following Tuesday.

The Socceroos were eliminated in the round of 32, while Brazil suffered a surprising defeat to Norway in the last 16. In response, Brazil's coach Carlo Ancelotti has only selected nine players from his World Cup squad for both matches, including a friendly against India on October 3. Chelsea forwards Joao Pedro and Estevao have been recalled, along with several new faces, such as goalkeepers Pedro Morisco and Otavio, defender Mauro Junior, and midfielders Breno Bidon and Gabriel Bontempo.

Established stars like Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Bruno Guimaraes, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Marquinhos are also expected to feature. Guimaraes emphasized the importance of including new faces, stating, "It's crucial to have that solid foundation so the coach can keep discovering new talent."

Meanwhile, Australia's coach Tony Popovic has omitted 10 players from his World Cup squad, including veteran goalkeeper and captain Mat Ryan and striker Cristian Volpato, who was recently fined for a positive cocaine test. Popovic has included seven uncapped players in the 25-man squad, which was further weakened by the injury withdrawal of Mohamed Toure.

Australia's Jackson Irvine sees the two Brazil matches as an excellent opportunity for new players to showcase their skills on a big stage, adding, "We need to take another step. We did amazing things over the summer, but we've got another tournament coming, and for us to grow, we have to look to progress."
