Belgium calls U.S. an unreliable ally in internal document — FT

Belgium’s Foreign Ministry characterized the United States under President Donald Trump as a less dependable ally in an internal document, according to the Financial Times. The report, which was obtained by the FT, suggests officials should broaden diplomatic ties across the political spectrum in Washington. Preparing the document in late 2025, the Belgium Foreign Ministry’s Americas and Caribbean unit stated that the U.S. is "no longer the partner it once was" and that current political situations could jeopardize significant Belgian and European Union interests.

The ministry urged a "thorough reassessment" of relations between the EU, Belgium, and the United States. Despite this, diplomats emphasized that maintaining engagement with the Trump administration is essential. The ministry recommended that Belgian officials deepen relationships not just with the U.S. federal government, but also with state-level officials, mayors of major cities, Congress, and the Democratic opposition.

Furthermore, it proposed establishing connections with representatives from both U.S. political parties who could play crucial roles in future U.S. politics. The document also noted the Trump administration's favorable view of purchases of U.S. weapons but advised Belgium to prioritize acquiring European military equipment. A spokesperson for the Belgium Foreign Ministry clarified that the internal document is not an officially endorsed political strategy.

A diplomatic conflict arose between the U.S. and Belgium in August following comments made by U.S. Ambassador Bill White. White posted an AI-generated image mocking Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke, leading to an outraged response from the Belgian government.
