AGC appeals acquittal of 15-year-old in Bandar Utama school murder case

The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has announced its intention to appeal the Shah Alam High Court's decision to acquit a 15-year-old boy accused of murdering a schoolmate at a Bandar Utama secondary school last year. The AGC filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal on September 22 following careful consideration of the High Court's judgment.

According to the AGC, the appeal was lodged to challenge the decision to acquit and discharge the accused. The High Court had summoned the teenager to present his defense on August 13, following the establishment of a prima facie case by the prosecution. The court subsequently acquitted and discharged the teenager, ruling that he was mentally unsound during the commission of the offense.

The accused was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for the murder of a 16-year-old girl in a women's toilet at the school, which took place between 9:20 am and 9:35 am on October 14, 2025. The victim had reportedly sustained approximately 180 stab wounds. Notably, Section 97(1) of the Child Act 2001 prohibits the imposition of the death penalty on an individual who was a minor at the time of committing the crime.
