Abbas warns against ‘another Nakba’ and urges faster implementation of Gaza peace plan

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cautioned the international community not to permit another "Nakba" and urged a more rapid implementation of the US-led peace plan for Gaza. In a pre-recorded address to the 81st UN General Assembly, Abbas described Palestinians as being in one of their most perilous periods, citing centuries of displacement, occupation, and denial of their right to self-determination, freedom, and independence.

He accused Israeli forces of causing destruction, suffering, and displacement in the Gaza Strip, declaring the conflict a "humanitarian catastrophe." Abbas emphasized the need to prevent "terrorist gangs protected by the Israeli occupation forces" from burning Palestinian homes while inhabitants are inside. He stressed the urgency of accelerating the second phase of the Gaza peace plan instead of wasting time.

In the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Abbas alleged increased settler violence and land confiscation under Israeli protection. He warned that the transitional period, ending in 2027, must not become permanent. Abbas lamented the destruction of homes, infrastructure, schools, universities, and hospitals during the 1948 conflict and the impact of Israeli policies, including the proposed E1 settlement, on the Palestinian people's life and existence.

He called for the international community to protect Palestinians, end the Israeli occupation, and implement a two-state solution based on international resolutions. Abbas questioned the silence of some countries and their support for Israel's weapons. The Palestinian leader delivered his speech via video due to the US denying visas to him and other officials for not fulfilling peace process commitments.

Abbas urged the US administration to return to dialogue and mutual respect, working with Palestinians and the international community to implement the two-state solution based on international legitimacy.
