UN General Assembly 2026: Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas warns against another Nakba

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has cautioned that Palestinians could face a repeat of the Nakba, or catastrophe, if the international community fails to act on its commitment to support Palestinian self-determination. Speaking via pre-recorded video at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Abbas condemned the United States for imposing punitive measures against his government for adhering to international law.

Abbas stated that his government has fulfilled its obligations, implemented a national reform program, and adhered to international law while rejecting violence and terrorism. He emphasized Israel's commitment to the two-state solution and peace based on UN resolutions. The Palestinian leader accused the U.S. of disregarding international legitimacy and called for an end to the visa ban on Palestinian officials and civil society entities who have cooperated with the International Court of Justice or the International Criminal Court.
