US, Denmark, Greenland sign pact on Arctic island’s security

The United States, Denmark and Greenland have signed a pact focusing on the security of the Arctic territory during the UN General Assembly in New York. The agreement was signed on Tuesday by US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen. Trump announced plans for the construction of "two very major military bases" in Greenland, stating that no adversary will be allowed to establish a military presence there.

He also declared that the US would begin developing a large military presence in the appropriate locations. Countries would require US approval before making sensitive investments on the island. The three governments disclosed a significant breakthrough in the dispute over the island shortly before the signing, with Frederiksen calling the deal a "milestone" beneficial for all parties, NATO and Europe.

Nielsen described it as a "win-win-win" situation and a historic agreement. The pact builds upon a defense agreement between the US and Greenland that has been in place since 1951. Trump has previously threatened to annex Greenland, which has strained NATO relations with Denmark and raised concerns about the alliance's cohesion. He also attempted to force the sale of Greenland to the US through punitive tariffs.
