Trump supports diesel export ban as fuel prices hit records

In the wake of record-high diesel prices in the United States, President Donald Trump has voiced support for a ban on diesel exports. This proposal is being advocated for by lawmakers from farm states, who argue that such a ban could help alleviate the soaring cost of energy. The surge in diesel prices is attributed to the disruptions in exports from major producers such as Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates following the wars in Iran and Ukraine.

During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump expressed his stance, stating, "I've said let's not send out the diesel. We make a lot of diesel... I've called for it. I've called for it within my people." The administration is currently evaluating the feasibility of such a ban, considering both a full and partial restriction. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besseent confirmed that the administration is examining the possibility of implementing the ban.

However, energy officials have raised concerns about the potential consequences of a diesel export ban. Energy Secretary Chris Wright warned that the ban could lead to a surplus of diesel on the US Gulf Coast, prompting refiners to reduce production rates and consequently decrease gasoline production. US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum also cautioned that a ban might not lower petroleum prices and could trigger retaliatory actions from energy-exporting countries, adversely affecting key US allies like California.

Though the ban could potentially lower diesel prices in the US Gulf Coast region temporarily, it could exacerbate supply constraints in Europe, where diesel demand is high and reliance on US exports is significant. Oil trading analyst Jim Mitchell noted that such a ban might damage key US allies in the region. Despite these concerns, Trump remains committed to the idea, emphasizing its potential impact on reducing Russia's war efforts in Ukraine.
