Trump signs landmark arctic security pact for Greenland

President Donald Trump has signed a new security pact with Denmark and Greenland, aimed at bolstering American and allied defenses in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The agreement, signed on September 22, 2026, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, enhances the U.S. military presence in Greenland while preserving the territory's status as a self-governing part of Denmark. Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen all attended the signing ceremony.

The agreement expands the U.S. security role in Greenland, allowing for upgrades at the existing Pituffik Space Base and the construction of new defense facilities in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. It also prohibits non-NATO countries from establishing military installations in Greenland. Trump emphasized that the agreement grants the United States permanent control over Greenland's security, though Danish and Greenlandic officials stressed that it respects Denmark's sovereignty and Greenland's right to self-determination.

This pact addresses the increasing strategic importance of the Arctic and the geopolitical competition surrounding it. It lays the groundwork for a larger U.S. military presence in the region without formally acquiring Greenland as a U.S. territory.
