Trump administration asks Supreme Court to detain Badar Khan Suri again

The Trump administration has requested the US Supreme Court to reconsider the release of Georgetown University academic Badar Khan Suri, who was held in an immigration detention facility for two months in 2025 due to his criticism of Israel. The Department of Justice (DOJ) submitted a petition to the high court on Monday, arguing that federal judges should not possess the authority to interfere in immigration court proceedings, where non-citizens seek to challenge their deportation orders.

By allowing this, the conservative-dominated Supreme Court could establish a significant precedent for future cases. Suri holds legal residency in the United States, possessing Indian citizenship and is married to a US citizen. His case attracted international attention following his arrest by masked agents on March 17, 2025, outside his residence in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., and his subsequent detention.
