Spain blames Morocco’s ‘failed’ border controls for 70,000-migrant surge in Ceuta

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has pointed the finger at Morocco's inadequate border controls as the culprit behind a massive influx of migrants into Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the North African coast. On July 30 and 31, over 70,000 migrants stormed Ceuta in an unprecedented surge that resulted in several deaths. While the majority of these newcomers subsequently returned to Morocco, several thousand opted to stay, causing unrest and daily protests from locals.

Sanchez, speaking in an interview with CNN, confirmed that his government is probing the events of July and has requested both explanations and corrective measures from Morocco, emphasizing that Morocco's border control clearly faltered during this crisis. Sanchez explained that his government requires answers from Moroccan authorities but stresses that there is no concrete proof of any orchestrated plan by Morocco.

A recent Spanish police report, obtained by AFP, reveals that the number of Moroccan border patrol officers near the border crossing was significantly less than usual, and that they failed to adequately prevent the mass entry. The police report, based on satellite imagery and eyewitness accounts, suggests that the border control failure played a pivotal role in the migrant influx.

Spain is now tasked with identifying the remaining migrants to assess their eligibility for asylum, with a particular focus on unaccompanied minors who cannot be deported without due process.
