Pezeshkian’s UN trip fuels diplomacy talk as US-Iran war enters critical phase

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has journeyed to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), amplifying discussions about potential diplomacy with the United States. Amidst the tense situation, Iran continues to maintain restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz, warning of a widening conflict should the US escalate its actions. This visit carries immense political weight, reflecting both nations' desperate search for a means to avoid further escalation.

Iran has made it clear that the Strait of Hormuz will not fully reopen until Washington addresses Tehran's demands. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, met with a US special envoy at the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. The Iranian side insists on ending the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, releasing frozen Iranian assets, and ceasing hostilities across all "resistance fronts."

Iran may be willing to reopen Hormuz within seven days if the US eases its military pressure and lifts the naval blockade, according to a senior Iranian official.

Iran's parliament speaker has reiterated that the strait will remain closed until Washington complies with Iran's conditions. Iran's President Pezeshkian is set to address the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, with US-Iran tensions and diplomatic endeavors remaining a focal point during the event. The diplomatic progress is delicate, with Iran's Revolutionary Guard vowing to alter the conflict's geography should the US intensify its actions.

These statements come following reports of attacks on tankers in Hormuz and heightened risks to commercial shipping. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported a vessel was hit by an unknown projectile while entering the strait, with two crew members injured.

On the other hand, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned potential sanctions on airports and companies involved in servicing Iranian airlines, set to take effect on September 23. The UN General Assembly gathering might serve as one of the few remaining channels to prevent the conflict from worsening. The US has proposed lifting Iran sanctions, canceling an economic campaign, and reopening Hormuz in exchange for Iran's reopening of the strait.

However, Trump has reportedly closed the door on the Iran deal, casting doubt on the possibility of diplomatic progress.
