Irish PM backs football manager after Israel FA criticism

Ireland's Prime Minister Micheal Martin defended his country's football manager, Heimir Hallgrimsson, following harsh criticism from Israel's football federation. The controversy arose after Israel's FA accused Hallgrimsson of being "stupid, ignorant and hypocritical" in his remarks regarding the war in Gaza. Martin, currently attending the UN General Assembly in New York, stated that such remarks were "unacceptable" and demanded that they be withdrawn.

Hallgrimsson sparked the issue by stating that the team was not playing "with genocide, we're playing against genocide" before two Nations League matches against Israel. Israel's FA responded by accusing Hallgrimsson of "stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy." Martin noted that Hallgrimsson's comments mirrored concerns raised by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the devastating impact of the conflict in Gaza.

This dispute has led to growing unrest in Ireland, with over 160 sportspeople signing a letter urging their team to boycott the fixtures scheduled for September 27 and October 4. Despite a motion from the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) requesting UEFA to suspend Israel from international competition, there was no support from European football authorities.

The FAI ultimately decided to proceed with the matches at neutral venues in Debrecen, Hungary, due to concerns over security and the potential consequences of withdrawing. The dispute highlights the deep divisions surrounding Ireland's stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, with the country previously recognizing a Palestinian state and criticizing Israel's actions in the region.
