Samsung's "AI Fridges" have become notorious for turning into useless, expensive bricks after a faulty software update. Homeowners in South Korea discovered that their nearly $4,000 appliances suddenly stopped working, leaving them with a costly, fresh food-ruining disaster. An error message appeared on the internal panel for hours, and even unplugging and re-plugging the fridge did not remedy the situation, as cool air continued to escape.

The malfunction occurred just before the Chuseok holiday break, a significant three-day celebration that usually involves setting aside special delicacies. Some owners were forced to discard these holiday-prepared dishes. When they sought assistance, the earliest servicing date was set for October 1, far after the holiday had ended.

Samsung's "Smart" fridges claim to know their contents, recommend recipes, and play music, features that many customers likely never utilize. This incident exemplifies the growing trend of turning everyday aspects of life into buggy, over-the-air software update-infested nightmares against consumers' will. Samsung maintains that its fridges can recommend recipes and play music thanks to their "AI" features, yet this is likely an unused function for most customers.

The problem extends beyond fridges, with other examples of overengineered AI appliances like AI toothbrushes, AI toasters, and facial recognition-enabled doorbells. While consumers still have choices when it comes to appliances, the reliance on AI in modern living may soon make reliable alternatives harder to find.
