Microsoft’s new Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch get a Snapdragon X2 Plus upgrade

Microsoft has unveiled a new generation of laptops, the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, equipped with the Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. These devices, slated for release on October 13th, have the potential to challenge the long-standing dominance of the MacBook Air in the realm of thin, light, and silent computing.

Despite lacking traditional active cooling fans, the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop utilize dense cooling pipes to manage heat effectively. During hands-on testing, these devices successfully handled intensive creative workflows, including real-time sketching, rendering 3D geometry in Blender, and editing the results in Photoshop. All three resource-intensive applications remained open and active simultaneously without any perceptible stutter, even when navigating between them.

The fanless design allows the hardware to maintain a cool temperature, with the Surface Pro chassis remaining comfortably cool to the touch. The devices boast upgraded 500-nit PixelSense displays, offering vibrant and punchy visuals, paired with responsive keyboards that provide satisfying tactile feedback. Both laptops are encased in sleek aluminum shells that exude a playful aesthetic.

While the Surface Pro 12-inch lacks a magnetic keyboard deck attachment for lapability, it compensates with impressive thermal management and snappy silicon performance. Priced at $1,149 and $1,199, respectively, the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop compete directly with Apple's MacBook Air lineup. Their fanless operation, sustained thermal performance, and powerful hardware make the Microsoft Surface lineup the closest contenders to the MacBook Air's everyday computing magic.
