Sanwo-Olu, UN, global partners to fight climate threats in Lagos

In a high-level strategic roundtable, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu joined forces with the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations Global Compact Networks, and regional partners from across Africa and the Caribbean to tackle the escalating climate threats affecting coastal communities and vital infrastructure.

The discussion centered on devising immediate, practical solutions and establishing sustainable climate financing mechanisms to protect coastal areas from the impending threat of extreme weather events.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, speaking via his X account, stressed the urgency of the matter, acknowledging that as a low-lying coastal megacity, Lagos is directly impacted by rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and frequent urban flooding. He explained, “Lagos is a coastal city, so climate change is not a distant concern for us. We see its effects in the flooding that affects our communities and the pressure it puts on our roads, homes, and businesses.”

The meeting underscored the need to move beyond conventional policy debates and invest in robust structural protections and proactive financial planning. A key focus was on bridging the funding gap for extensive resilience projects by leveraging private sector investments alongside international development frameworks. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that municipal finances alone are inadequate to construct enduring defenses against severe environmental pressures.

He further explained, “By working directly with the private sector, we are putting measures in place and building a stronger, more prepared Lagos. Government cannot do this alone. We need strong partnerships and practical solutions that will help secure our economic future.” The joint framework with the UN Global Compact Networks and transatlantic allies seeks to develop scalable models for coastal defense, infrastructure enhancement, and climate-resilient urban development in Lagos State.
