Sanwo-Olu, UN, global partners to fight climate threats in Lagos

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hosted a high-level strategic roundtable with the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations Global Compact Networks, and regional partners. The purpose was to tackle the increasing climate threats affecting coastal communities and infrastructure in Lagos. The discussion centered on implementing immediate, practical solutions and establishing sustainable financing mechanisms to protect coastal areas from extreme weather events.

Sanwo-Olu, aware of the city's vulnerability due to its low-lying geography, emphasized the necessity of moving beyond conventional policy debates to implement tangible, structural defenses and financial preparations. The roundtable highlighted the need to bridge the funding gap for resilience projects by combining private sector investments with international development resources.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that municipal funds alone are inadequate for constructing enduring defenses against environmental pressures. He further explained that government efforts alone are insufficient and that robust partnerships are crucial for securing the city's economic future. The agreement formed with the UN Global Compact Networks and transatlantic collaborators aims to develop scalable models for coastal defense, infrastructure strengthening, and climate-resilient urban development in Lagos State.
