Sanctions must remain in place and be strengthened as long as war continues, Zelensky says after meeting Burnham

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after a meeting with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, has reiterated that sanctions against Russia must persist until the war ends. The President discussed various security matters, including preparations for winter and diplomatic opportunities, during the meeting. He specifically thanked the United Kingdom for its ongoing support of Ukraine's energy sector, noting a new contribution valued as winter approaches.

Zelensky emphasized that as long as Ukrainians face the daily threat of missile and drone strikes from Russia, sanctions cannot and should not be lifted. He added that the Prime Minister and he share the view that sanctions should remain in place and be strengthened in the face of ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed disapproval of the EU's decision to remove Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from its sanctions list.
