Anwar, Pendang MP settle defamation suit

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reached a settlement in a defamation lawsuit filed three years ago against Pendang MP Awang Hashim. Anwar's legal representative, Sankara Nair, announced in the High Court that the two parties have agreed to resolve the dispute amicably. Anwar has withdrawn the suit without the option to refile, and no costs order has been made.

The judge, Roslan Mat Nor, subsequently struck out the suit on agreed terms and vacated the trial dates. The parties stated in a joint court statement that they decided to settle the matter, prioritising more important issues for the benefit of the people and country, as well as considering the implications of the defamation proceedings, including the associated litigation costs.

Awang Hashim humbly withdraws all statements made on February 21, 2023, which formed the basis of the legal action, and agrees not to repeat or republish any such statements. Both parties hope the settlement will be accepted and respected by all, and that the matter will not be politicised or used to affect the country's harmony, unity, and stability.
