OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs push for AI cooperation at UN after Trump rebuffs 'globalist scheme' to control it

President Donald Trump criticized the concept of international oversight for artificial intelligence during his address to the United Nations General Assembly, referring to such proposals as a "globalist scheme" aimed at controlling the technology. In contrast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei will be briefing the UN Security Council on Wednesday about AI and international security.

Altman will discuss OpenAI's safety efforts and the significance of international cooperation, while Amodei has previously advocated for slower AI model development and independent evaluation. Trump's stance contradicts the concerns of AI safety advocates, who have faced criticism from both the MAGA crowd and venture capitalists concerned about effective altruism.

The president believes that the technology will surpass the industrial revolution and will not listen to those who warn about an existential threat. He has previously dismissed such fears as a "hoax" and suggested that a "high IQ" president is the only necessary safeguard. Trump's administration has already imposed criminal and regulatory power over AI companies, notably designating Anthropic a supply-chain risk and delaying the release of its Mythos model.

The UN session aims to address malicious AI use and the risk of losing control over advanced models, with representatives from France, Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue, and Yoshua Bengio scheduled to speak. The event comes as Trump prepares to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who may discuss AI during a state dinner at the White House, where other tech industry figures, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Altman, and Apple's Tim Cook, are expected to attend.
