Altman and Amodei Call for Global AI Guardrails at UN

The CEOs of artificial intelligence companies Anthropic and OpenAI, Dario Amodei and Sam Altman, have called for global standards to address potential risks associated with AI at a United Nations Security Council meeting on September 23rd, according to Bloomberg. Both emphasized that governments and the industry should collaborate in decision-making regarding the technology.

Amodei, speaking via video feed, mentioned that AI can benefit science and healthcare but also poses risks, including the potential for terrorists to develop bioweapons or AI models becoming uncontrollable. Altman proposed swift incident reporting and global agreements on safeguards and oversight during his Security Council appearance.

He also stressed that these standards should not favor incumbents or specific business models, and must support both open and closed model developers, new entrants, and established labs. In an interview with Bloomberg Television, Microsoft President Brad Smith expressed support for independent AI evaluators and an off-switch to retain human control over advanced systems.

Meanwhile, in recent days, New York Governor announced the implementation schedule for the state's AI safety law; OpenAI hired external watchdogs to monitor AI risk; the UN Secretary-General urged world leaders to develop AI safeguards; and California Governor ordered the state to convene experts to guide its AI safety laws.
