MP status does not place anyone beyond law – EOCO on Manhyia South MP’s attempted arrest

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has clarified that being a Member of Parliament (MP) does not exempt an individual from being investigated or protected from the law. This statement came after an attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah on September 23, 2026, related to an ongoing investigation.

The EOCO acknowledged that Awuah subsequently sought sanctuary at Parliament, which is currently on recess. However, the office affirmed its commitment to upholding constitutional privileges and immunities of MPs, ensuring that its actions comply with the Constitution and relevant laws. "Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law," EOCO emphasized.

The office clarified that this does not imply a disregard for parliamentary privilege or other protections afforded by the Constitution. "At the same time, EOCO will not take any step that is inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection provided by the Constitution," the statement concluded. The EOCO reiterated that its investigation is ongoing and it will continue its duties while respecting the Constitution, the rule of law, and parliamentary privileges.
