Jerry Jones pushes back on idea of an expansion team in Europe

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has repeatedly expressed his belief that the NFL will expand to include multiple teams in foreign countries, with Europe being the most probable location. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones appears to be skeptical about this expansion through the addition of new teams. Jones told Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan, "I don’t know about an expansion.

I see the games continuing like they are, and I see the ethos, if you will, of the game, the story of the game really expanding all over the world. But fundamentally, to have an expansion team, probably is pretty far. If it’s here, it’s in the future."

Jones did not specify whether he was pessimistic about the possibility of an international presence in general, or specifically through the addition of new teams. The only alternative to adding new teams would be relocating existing franchises, which he did not seem to favor either. Commissioner Goodell currently holds more power than any individual owner, so if he sees potential for an international team, it would be advisable to take his concerns seriously.

The NFL has long floated the idea of a team in London as a means to generate interest in the sport there. More recently, the talk seems to be taking on a more serious tone. While it is unlikely to occur soon, if the NFL truly wants to spread the passion for the sport among fans in other countries, it may eventually need to provide them with a local team to rally behind. London remains the most logical starting point, with the potential for one team playing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and another at Wembley Stadium.
