Italy’s Colosseum closes after worker dies in accident

The iconic Colosseum in Rome suspended operations on Wednesday following a fatal incident where a 22-year-old worker tragically lost his life. Andrea Moretti succumbed to his injuries after falling while working on a new lighting installation in the ancient amphitheater. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed deep sorrow over the incident, urging for a swift clarification of the accident's cause. "For a person to die at the age of 22 is unacceptable, especially when it happens in the workplace," Meloni stated.

Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli described the tragedy as "a tragic event that has left us shocked and stunned." The ministry confirmed that the second-tier section where the accident occurred would be closed to the public. Authorities were actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the site slated to remain fully closed to visitors for the remainder of the day.

The Colosseum, an ancient Roman monument and the world's largest amphitheater, had already been partially inaccessible to the public since early Wednesday. Although the ancient structure hosts up to 20,000 visitors daily during peak times, it serves as a poignant reminder of the site's historical significance and ongoing safety concerns.
